Really, it's all Jason's fault.
A few years ago Jason figured that he'd follow in his dad's footsteps and become a attorney, so after lounging away in Santa Cruz finishing up an Anthropology degree he headed back up the peninsula to San Francisco to attend USF law school. While charming his way through his first year, he met another Santa Cruz transplant named April and invited her to his birthday party. Not knowing what she was in for April showed up at a tiki bar in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco. There she found that Jason had quite a few "interesting" friends two of who where named "Mike" - one of whom wouldn’t leave her alone. While spending the evening traipsing through North Beach frequenting many of its "interesting" establishments Mike thought "Hey, this girl is kind of neat." But, at the end of the night, they went their seperate ways, thinking they'd never cross paths again. Mike even forgot her name.
Mike was wallowing around in his terminally single state and Jason decides he should meet his friend April. "Sure, can't hurt" Mike thinks. Jason starts inviting the two out to events to see if any sparks would fly. Mike, not realizing this was the same girl from 2 years previous, thought "Hey, this April is neat, we should hang out more.” At first April was mildly upset that he didn't remember her from the tiki bar, but she got over it. So out on a few dates they go, one of which turned into an impromptu late night road trip to Las Vegas with Jason and friends in tow (now, there's a long story). After a few dates, April decides she should be seeing the inside of a law book more than silly guys that drive to Vegas on a dare without a second thought.
Mike's moping around the house having just gotten hit by the Internet layoff bug trying to figure out how long he can go without having to get a real job (8 months it turns out). Out at a bar one night Jason mentions that he's heading to Mexico in a couple of weeks and that Mike should go with him. Mike, ever the pragmatist, says that its not a good time, he'd just gotten laid off, he's not sure what he's going to do for work, money's kind of tight...
"April's going." Jason says.
Jason, Katie, Trish and Mike step off the plane from San Francisco in balmy Cancun and head through customs where Mike sees a cute blond wearing a striped shirt and a huge grin. "Hi!" she says. "Hey there" he replies. A week of sun, death defying swims, broken digitial cameras and venomous bug bites later April and Mike are back at the airport waiting for April to get on a plane back to her new job at the National Labor Relations Board in Washington DC.
Jason is out in Washington DC for a conference and get a chance to hang out with an old friend from law school. April has been in Washington D.C. for two years and is contemplating heading back to the left coast. "I miss California," she laments "and not to mention the bugs out here are huge." (April has unfortunate propensity to be attacked by biting and stinging bugs of all types). Jason says, "Well, you should move back." A couple of weeks later April's the newest associate at a small lawfirm in sunny Santa Cruz, CA. Weeks after her move to the left coast she's up in San Francisco sitting at an outside patio drinking a beer with that Mike guy she'd met so many years earlier. "Maybe this time it could work" they both think.

April and Mike head up the stairs from the Metro into an unseasonably warm spring day in Paris on their way to Sacre Coeur. As they reach the top of the steps Mike pulls April into a small park right outside the Metro stop. Bordering the edge there's a cobalt blue tiled wall covered with white writing. It's hard to make out what it says but you can quickly tell that it’s in languages from all over the world.
"It says I love you" he says. “In three hundred languages …here hold this" and he hands her the small safety pin that's been holding the ring safe inside his jeans pocket as he drops to one knee.
"April I love you. With all my heart" he says quickly, holding back tears. "Will you marry me?"
"Yes." she says with a tear covered grin. "Of course"
